Elsa MOESCHLIN
Das rote Pferd [= The Red Horse]. Ein Kinderbuch.
Berlin, Herbert Stuffer Verlag, (1927).
4to, publisher’s half blue cloth over colour pictorial boards. 19 pp. Coloured illustrations throughout. Complete.
Rare First Edition.
The story of Peter and his wooden red toy Dala horse that comes alive. Illustrated by the author with very beautiful and richly coloured pictures on each page, somewhat primitive in style. The noted artist and author Elsa Moeschlin (1879-1950) was born in Sweden but lived and worked in Switzerland.
Published by Herbert Stuffer (b.1892), one of the most inspiring personalities of the Berlin children’s book scene. In July 1926 he founded a publishing house in Berlin-Charlottenburg, in which he published primarily picture books, youth writings and fiction. Open-minded he supported the artistic innovations with ambitious children’s book projects; a great promoter of Modernism, he worked only with contemporary authors and illustrators, among whom were Karin Michaëlis, Lisa Tetzner, Conny Meissen, Tom Seidmann-Freud, Susanne Ehmcke, Elsa Eisgruber and Friedrich Böer.
A very good copy.
