Attractive Insel-Verlag production and apparently the only book design of this artist.
The publishing house Insel-Verlag was founded in 1899 by a group of wealthy amateurs and aesthetes who wanted to escape the bad taste of mass editorial production. The trademark was designed by the architect Peter Behrens, and represents a sailing ship (symbol of freedom) in a circle perched on Art Nouveau waves. The company earned its renown by turning book production into an art form; it printed the works of classic authors and also gave a new generation of writers, such as Rainer Maria Rilke, their start.
Bookplate of the Max Zettler collection.
