COCTEAU (Jean)

Drôle de ménage. Texte et dessins de Jean Cocteau.

(Paris), Paul Morihien, [Presses des Imprimeries Union et Mourlot Frères], (1948).

4to, publisher’s colour pictorial wrappers. (60) pp., cover design and 30 original lithographs by the author-artist printed by Mourlot on backgrounds of various colours. Complete.

First Edition of Cocteau’s only children’s book, a nonsense tale of the Moon and Sun entrusting the education of their rowdy children to a disreputable dog and intended “to teach children and parents to read!”. In the dedication, the author allows children, if they do not like the colours, to take their coloured pencils and colour the book!

Inventive mise en page.

Fine copy of the trade issue.
