One of the First Belgian Private Presses

Charles DUMERCY - Max ELSKAMPLa vieille boucherie et les aveugles.

A Gansopolis (Antwerp), chez tous les Libraires [printed by Max Elskamp on his private press "L'Alouette"], 1902.

Small 8vo, publisher’s illustrated grey stiff wrappers sewn in Japanese-style with a red and yellow cord. 16 butterfly leaves. With 15 woodcuts in black by Max Elskamp, the noted Belgian folkorist, poet and illustrator (1862-1931), a close friend of Henry van de Velde. Text by Charles Dumercy (1848-1934).

First and only edition printed in small number at home on the artist’s private press “L’Alouette”.

It is one of the earliest examples of private press printing in Belgium, along with Henry van de Velde short-lived press “Joyeuse” established in 1895.

A very good copy.
